Since regulatory and safety initiatives became mainstays in the oil and gas industry, any chemical development has been restricted to “borrowing” chemistry from other industries. This often involves forcing solutions that are not perfectly suited to the industry’s unique challenges, akin to trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

At Innospec, we take a different approach — it all starts with designing the molecule for its specific application. For more than 80 years, Innospec has focused on building a company that specializes in the design and manufacture of highly functional chemistries specific to oilfield operations. These products are used in a variety of applications throughout the oil production process — from production chemicals such as scale inhibitors, paraffin, and asphaltene dispersants, foaming agents to drilling and cementing additives, and wellbore cleaners to completion products necessary to re-connect the well to the reservoir. In addition, Innospec offers flexible synthesis and plant capabilities (sulfonation, ethoxylation, esterification) that allow us to customize surfactants and solvents for applications that even include Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) formulations.

Regulatory Compliance

In 2016 Innospec made it latest acquisition of European diversified surfactants which include alkoxylation, amidation/ esterification, and sulfonation capabilities to expand its Home Care, Personal Care and Oilfield product offering. This acquisition also included adding three manufacturing locations in France, Italy, and Spain to our expansive manufacturing presence.

Worldwide, the oil and gas industry as well as the chemical industry is heavily regulated. Both the national and regional regulations continuously evolve, a critical component of our sustainability strategy, is to ensure our products are compliant with these changing regulations. We accomplish this through strategic partnerships and chemical trade associations, such as American Chemistry Council (ACC); UK’s Chemical Industries Association (CIA); European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC); Technical Committee of Petroleum Additive Manufacturers in Europe (ATC); European Committee of Organic Surfactants and their Intermediates (CESIO), and Environmental and Health Risk Assessment Management of Surfactants and Detergents (EOSCA); (CIA); European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC); Technical Committee of Petroleum Additive Manufacturers in Europe (ATC); European Committee of Organic Surfactants and their Intermediates (CESIO), and Environmental and Health Risk Assessment Management of Surfactants and Detergents (EOSCA); Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA), European Federation for Cosmetic Ingredient Manufacturers (EFfCI), and European Oilfield Specialty Chemicals Association (EOSCA), which allows us to regularly monitor and evaluate new or potential changes in legislation.

Another certification to ensure product compliance is through REACH registrations. The EU, UK, Turkey, and Korea have each established its own REACH program. The UK REACH entered into force on 1 June 2007 and then later the UK was brought into UK law in January 2021. In fact, Innospec’s Marchon® OFC100, which is currently used in a wide variety of corrosion inhibitors for crude oil applications is one of the few REACH registered imidazolines in the European market.

In 2019, Innospec obtained CEFAS (The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science) registration for six key oilfield surfactants. Those products are:

From our main manufacturing site in Ellesmere Port, UK to our newly acquired facilities in France, Italy, and Spain, we fully integrate chemical synthesis, blending, and manufacturing. These facilities underscore our commitment to producing and delivering high-quality innovative chemistries.

Each of our manufacturing sites are independently certified to comply with a range of national and international standards on quality, safety, the environment, energy, good manufacturing practice and sustainable sourcing. In 2023, our Barcelona, Spain site achieved ISO 14001 certification for the first time and obtained ISO 9001, the European Federation for Cosmetics Ingredients Good Manufacturing Practice (EFfCI) good manufacturing practice certification, confirming the site has met the strict requirements of product quality and cleanliness practices.
